An NHS nurse who says she is so poor she cannot cope with the cost of living is asking strangers for donations.

Sarah Gilson, 39, says that after paying her rent, childcare and travel costs she is left with nothing – despite working full-time as a cardiac nurse.

The single mum is understood to work at one of the country’s largest NHS trusts, which runs both University College Hospital and the Royal London Hospital.

Speaking about her situation on Twitter, Ms Gilson admitted that she feels unable to provide for her autistic daughter Beth, 10, because of her low pay.

She is now hoping sympathetic strangers will be able to send her money to help make ends meet.

‘I’m currently really struggling to pay my bills (and with the cost of living in general) so I would appreciate it if you could retweet.’

She continued: ‘I’m more than happy to show proof of my incomings and outgoings (if you scroll down my TL I have actually provided screen shots).

‘But if you wish to troll me I’m just going to block you. You are perfectly capable of ignoring this tweet if you disagree with it’s purpose. Thank you.’

Ms Gilson’s LinkedIn profile states that she worked at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs a number of high profile London hospitals, for 11 years.

Writing online, the mum-of-one said her take home pay is £2,000 a month, of which she spends £670 on rent, around £600 on childcare and £579 on travel.

She went on: ‘My basic outgoings (rent, travel to work and childcare) are equal to my monthly wages.

The tweet provoked some trolling but also sympathy from other Twitter users (Picture: @Lillred/Twitter)

‘There is nothing left for bills and groceries, I have to work extra shifts to pay for these (if they’re available).’

Ms Gilson has more than 1,500 followers on Twitter and was trolled for asking for cash to be sent to her on PayPal.

Apologising for ranting online, she said: ‘Everyday I live with the fact that I can’t support my child. I should be able to, I work my ass off and I fail.’

One Twitter user replied: ‘Many of us lower income earners, many of us in healthcare can’t afford to be two grand worse off.

‘It will be the difference between just managing as we are right now and actual being in poverty. Having to decide whether to eat or heat etc.’

Ms Gilson responded: ‘I made this point today and was trolled like crazy for it. I’m a nurse and single mum.

‘I already have to work overtime to pay my bills/afford groceries because my wages cover rent/childcare/travel and that’s it. I can’t afford to be worse off!’

The nurse added that the extra shifts she is reliant on are ‘sporadic and can be cancelled at any time’.

In June, Ms Gilson started a GoFundMe page in the hope of taking Beth on holiday after her exams next year.

On that page she wrote: ‘At first I was reluctant because I HATE asking for help but I now realise that asking for help when the reason is not about you is okay.’

I bet she has conveniently forgotten to mention you get 75% of childcare costs reimbursed by the government also she would get child benefit and what about the father does he not contribute to the child’s costs? Nearly £600 on travel seems very high considering she lives in London. Even if she worked 7 days a week (which I very much doubt) that would be £20 per day in travel????? I am a fulltime carer for my mum and spend between 12-15 hours a day at my mums before going back to my house. I have had to give up work to look after her. I get a small pension from when I was medically retired from the MOD and because of that I don’t get a penny from universal credit. I get £66.15 a week for working over 80 hours a week as my mum’s carer. I don’t go on Twitter etc asking for money. I make ends meet. People like this woman really really annoy and upset me.Grrrrrr to her
