A Pokemon Go addict was shot and killed after witnessing a robbery while out playing the game just before midnight.
Cayla Campos, 21, and her boyfriend were playing the augmented reality game near Bianchetti Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Friday night night when they spotted two men robbing someone.
Campos and her boyfriend, named as Sidney, tried to drive her car away from danger – but the robbers fired shots at her.
The aspiring dentist was struck in the neck by a bullet, crashed her car into a house and died.
Campos’ best friend Cody Bell said the victim was dedicated to Pokemon Go, which sees players hunt down cartoon monsters in real life locations using their phones.
He told KRQE: ‘Her and her boyfriend always make a loop around this park before they go home and play Pokemon Go because their apartment is literally right there…
‘She was just such an amazing person.
‘She was my closest friend. I am just devastated that she is gone.’
Campos’ fellow Pokemon Go players says her murder has served as a sobering reminder to remain on-guard while out and about.
Kody Love told KOAT: ‘It definitely makes me think twice about where and when I’m playing.
‘There’s a lot of rough neighborhoods and times you probably shouldn’t be out.
‘I hope they do.
‘I mean, you just need to be aware of your surroundings and be safe. Take into account your own safety when you go out and play.’
Fellow players Levi Perez and David Hutzel, who are also from Albuquerque, said news of Campos’ death had spooked their parents.
Perez said his mother warned him ‘to be really cautious.’
Meanwhile, Hutzel says he now plans to stay within his own neighborhood, and make sure he always carries a phone to contact his parents with.
Police say the robbery involves two vehicles – a red car that may have been a Ford Mustang, and a silver four door sedan.
They have appealed for anyone with further information to contact them.
