A student has been arrested after allegedly threatening others with a handgun at a British university.

Armed police swarmed over Exeter University today following reports of student threatening others with a gun. A man was arrested and police are now examining the weapon.

Student Katie, 21, told Devon Live that about seven police vans raced to the scene as armed officers evacuated several buildings.

‘They were wearing bullet proof vests,’ she said. ‘The building was put in lockdown and the students evacuated. They also evacuated some of the building nearby such as Reed Hall and the old library, the business school and innovation centre.’

Another eyewitness said she was in the campus cafe when she saw police with guns and dogs running past.

They stormed the site’s Amory building then led the male out in handcuffs as students looked on.

A police spokesman said: ‘Armed units were sent to Exeter University following reports of a student making threats to other students, whilst in possession of a handgun.

‘Police currently have one man in custody and have seized a weapon; we are now looking to see if this weapon is genuine or a replica.

We can confirm that we have had no reported injuries and are not currently looking for anyone else in connection to this matter.

We wish to reassure those on campus that they are safe. Local officers will remain in the area as we continue our enquiries into this incident.
